Baja California Sur

by Baja California Sur |

An enticing mix of desert, unspoiled beaches and incredible marine life spells success for once-deprived region. Without Hollywood, Sea World, orange groves, stadium seating movie theaters, Disneyland, Muscle Beach, manicured lawns, and white picket fences, southern California would probably look much like Baja California. Occupying the bottom half of this narrow peninsula, Baja California Sur (BCS) is about as wild as it gets and offers visitors an idea of the unspoiled California of 400 years ago, albeit with modern amenities. This simplicity stems from the state government’s commitment to attracting only top-end investments that respect local laws, communities, and the environment. The result is a state with enormous tourism potential with a few select developments. This adds up to a lot of virgin beaches that will remain so until the right developer comes along.

A case in point is La Paz, the capital of BCS, where the beach that formerly housed the old governor’s mansion is now the site of Playa de la Paz, a high-end residential resort that has had minimal environmental impact and that will add value to a paradisaical piece of coastline. The government of BCS not only welcomes the right kind of foreign investment, it also facilitates projects, recognizing that in turn, these will create jobs and bring in tax revenue.
Narciso Agundez Montaño, the Governor of BCS, explains, “We promote the state and welcome companies that meets the legal requirements and are looking to make a responsible investment.” The state has found this approach to be mutually beneficial: “The state’s environment lends itself to high-end developments, because the higher the quality of the investment, the better the result will be for the investor and the local community.”

Rosa Delia Cota Montaño, the head of of La Paz’s city administration, takes a more romantic approach to investment. “We are looking for investors who don’t simply want to do business, but who will fall in love with our city,” she says. High standards perhaps, but she is convinced that the beauty of the region, coupled with its tranquility and security will bring in the right companies.

Baja 1000

by Baja California Sur |

Keeping the same venues and nearly the same race weekends for its five open desert races as the past five years, the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will again feature two races in Southern Nevada and three in Mexico in 2010. The 2010 SCORE Desert Series will again start with the most unique and the shortest race of the season and finish with the oldest and most recognized desert race in the world, the Baja 1000. November 17.-21. 2010 is scheduled for the 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 race which will be a peninsula race in Baja California, Mexico, starting in Baja California and finishing in Baja California Sur. SCORE officials will announce before the end of this year exactly where the 2010 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will start and finish.
Sal Fish: “With everything going on right now with the world economy, SCORE has decided to contain the costs of our entry fees at as close to the level of 2008 and 2009 as possible and we are excited about the prospects of a peninsula race for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000,” said Fish. “The SCORE races annually produce over $30 million in overall economic impact for Mexico and it will be good for Baja California Sur to receive its share of this tourism influx our events bring to Baja in 2010.”
According to this statement is not decided yet where the Baja 1000 2010 will start and where the finish line is. La Paz and Cabo San Lucas was the location of choice in the past. So baja California Sur has for "motor sport freaks" something to look forward to!!!
2009 Baja 1000: Unfortunately did get Baja California Sur for this years running the "short end of the stick" by having the Tecate SCORE 1000 run a second year in a row in Baja California. Under "regular" circumstances a point to point - also called peninsula run - race to La Paz was "due". SCORE Intl. decided against that having in view the world economy and the financial burden this layout would put onto the race team. Not so good for the BCS fans but makes sense.
In 2 days time the race will be run as a loop-race starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California North. Some quick info for the interested.
