Baja Sur Whale Watching
Baja California is one of the premier locations to watch whales in the world. More than 20 species of whales are encountered around Baja (most year-round), making this area an important center for whale observation. In addition, whale watching is becoming more common in the Sea of Cortez. The magnificent Blue Whales, the largest living creatures on earth, come to the Sea of Cortez each year, as do Humpback Whales, Sperm Whales, Finback Whales, Minke Whales, Orcas, schools of dolphin and Pilot whales, and many other creatures of.sea, land and air. The greatest concentration of whales, however, involves the gathering of large shoals of Grey Whales in the Baja California Peninsula lagoons of the “El Vizcaino” biosphere reserve, providing tourists with a tremendous opportunity to observe the whales close up.
El VizcaĆno Biosphere Reserve is Mexico’s largest protected area. Ecosystems found within the reserve include arid zones, dunes and a 5 km-wide littoral zone along its 450 km of coast. The reserve also includes three gray whale sanctuaries that were created in 1972: Ojo de Liebre, Guerreo Negro and San Ignacio Bays.
VizcaĆno’s region is biologically rich; its marine resources are especially important. There are 308 terrestrial and marine vertebrates inhabiting the reserve
